5 Things to ask yourself when becoming a writer

In this post I will be going over five questions every writer should ask themselves in my personal opinion because I have been writing for many years now and have asked myself these questions many times before.

1. Why am I becoming a Writer?

When becoming a writer, you should ask yourself why. Not in a bad way, not why would I do this, mainly you need to determine why you are becoming a writer in general. Are you becoming one because you want to? Are you doing it for reasons that others think would suit you? What exactly draws you to the art of literature?

2. What do I want to write about?

This is a question I have asked myself many, many, MANY times over. What to write about, should I write about fiction, non-fiction, biographies, sci-fi, horror, etc. There are so many genres and so many things to write about. Best thing to always determine is what you are better at writing, and what you enjoy writing about.

3. Should I start a blog?

This is a question I asked myself, so many times, but it’s one thing that I should have acted on. Should you start a blog? Yes, in my opinion you should, even if it is a free blog with a long URL, it is fine. Blogging helps you in the skill of writing; you can improve your technique and get feed back from those interested in your genre. With a blog you can also use it on your resume to show your past works and the way you write if you are looking to work with a company based around writing.

4. What makes me different from all the other writers?

What is the difference between me and them? Is my writing better, is my use of adjectives better? There are many things that make writers similar, but what separates them is vast. We all have our own techniques, our own ideas, along with our own minds. We are individuals and we can all be different: you just need to determine what is different and find a way to excel at it.

5. What am I doing this for?

What are you becoming a writer for? The money, the fame, or the true love of it? There are many more answers to this question, but those three tend to be the main ones proposed. Those are the three I asked myself but for me it was easier than many others. I love writing, and it is what drives me. You should determine what you want from this art and find ways to help fulfil that goal.
